Robert Overstreet, MD Obituary

Bob was the consummate host. His specialty though, was clean up detail.

The youngest of 3 sons born to Irma and Sam Overstreet, he always knew mom wanted a girl.

He last retired after a decade as a pharmacy tech in Charlestown IN. His previous careers included 2 years as a Navy doctor in Orange, TX and a long stint as an Internist/Gastroenterologist in Louisville and Charlestown.

He met Joe Anne while at Male and St Paul Methodist. Their relationship was one for the ages, both before and after the divorce. At Denison he pledged Sigma Chi and continued after retirement to meet up with the local alumni group.

As a gastroenterologist, he jumped at the chance to learn to operate new scopes in the early 70’s. Bob’s love for his work was apparent, but he was happiest when he went into practice with his son Steve.

He was a plumber and a tinkerer. When he married Annette, they began a total renovation of the house on Bohart Lane in Charlestown. The property was massive. All of the grandkids would ride the tractor and hunt for Annette’s plastic eggs.

He died with a remnant scar on his thigh from a run-in with a chain saw. Alone at the time, he came down from the ladder and drove himself to the ER.

The property at Stonecreek Village was a brilliant move that came with a community that totally enveloped him. He created a weekly Wednesday Coffee Klatch that has become one of their hallmark get togethers. For breakfast on Mondays, Bob headed over to Louisville where he enjoyed the company of a group of doctors/nurses who dubbed themselves the Medical Mafia. On Sundays he could be found reading as liturgist from the lectern at New Chapel United Methodist Church.

At 80, he and Annette took on 3 years of parental responsibility for 4 year old greatgrandchild Denyail. Then 3 years ago, they encouraged grandchild January to move in with them. Annette died of COVID in December and since then, he and January had become the Dynamic Duo. Luckily, she has embraced the community just like her Bob.

He leaves four children (and their spouses): Jennie, Debbie, Mike and Steve, nine grandchildren: Allison, Samantha, Andrea, Jenni, Wes, Jack, Emma Graham and Evelyn, and eight greats: Weston, Hank, Blakely, Baker, Owen, Jack, Parker and Sam.

His friends all over southern Indiana and Kentucky will miss those smiling, warm eyes.

Everybody’s talkin’ bout a sharp dressed man.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
