A private graveside service for Virginia W. (Hunt) Gorse was held on Friday, January 10, 2014, at the Bethlehem Cemetery, Bethlehem, Indiana.  She died Sunday, January 5, 2014, at Bee Hive Homes, Georgetown, Indiana.

Mrs. Gorse was born on August 16, 1918 in Nashville, TN, to the late Julia L. Winnett and Virgil D. Hunt.  Her family heritage dates back to early settlers of New England in the Norwich, Connecticut area.  After graduation from high school in Nashville, TN, she attended business school in Boston, MA and then worked as a secretary and business machines operator for various companies in Tennessee, Florida and Massachusetts.  Being very proficient with her math skills, she prepared and filed her own taxes until 2011.

Mrs. Gorse married the late Capt. James F. Gorse on December 8, 1945, at the Plymouth Congregational Church, Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida; moved to Lynn, MA until 1947 when they moved to Cleveland, Ohio and then San Francisco, CA with Mr. Gorse’s job with the FBI.  Mrs. Gorse and her husband moved to Cape Cod, MA in 1967 after Mr. Gorse’s retirement.  She relocated to Indiana to live near her surviving relatives in 2011.

Mrs. Gorse led a full and active life.  She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Palestine Chapter #114, Newton, MA for over 70 years; was past president of the Garden Club of Hyannis, MA; the Cape Cod Chapter #277 of the AARP; and, the Cape Cod Horticultural Society.  She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees; was an honorary member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the F.B.I., Inc.; and was a member of the South Congregational Church, Centerville, MA for 40 years.  She was voted “Woman of the Year” by Beta Sigma Phi business women’s club and received many community service awards for her volunteerism.   She loved art, music, and golf; along with raising and showing Golden Retriever dogs.

Survivors include cousins:  Sandra W. Lewis (Terry), Jeffersonville; Linda W. Allen (Steve), New Albany; and Barbara Mead (Jim), Jeffersonville; Jennifer Wilcox (Robin) and Maddie Wilcox, Sellersburg.

A Memorial Service and Reception will be held to celebrate her life later this year at the South Congregational Church, Centerville, MA.

Special appreciation is extended to the caregivers at Bee Hive Homes and Amedisys Hospice, especially Ms. Donna Poole.
