Obituary for Travis Lee McKinney

Travis Lee McKinney, a bright soul who filled the lives of those around him with love and laughter, passed away on September 29, 2025, in New Albany, Indiana. Born on February 4, 2003, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, Travis was a cherished son, brother, father, and friend.

Travis was known for his warm-hearted personality and his genuine desire to make others proud. At a young age, he displayed an extraordinary spirit when he approached a soldier, shook his hand, and expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you for helping protect me, I hope to be a good strong, standup soldier one day.” Such moments characterized his life, showcasing a deep appreciation for the people around him.

Travis loved spending time with his best friends, Kevin, Taylor, and Michael, often hanging out at his home where his mother ensured that the best snacks were always available. He enjoyed fishing trips with his father, Darin, and sister, Amber, sharing silly videos on a daily basis and bringing joy and humor to every situation. His playful spirit was infectious, and he had a talent for developing hilarious smart-aleck remarks that reminded everyone of his dad.

Among his many memorable moments was a precocious decision at the age of six when he packed his toys and announced his intention to move in with the neighbors because they had more fun. However, as he neared the end of the driveway, he turned back, realizing that he couldn't leave his mother, further reflecting the loving bond he shared with his family.

As a father, Travis held his daughter, Elleigh Mae, dear to his heart, always striving to care for her and her mother, Kayla Swanner. His love for family was evident in everything he did, as he diligently sought to make his parents, Kina and Darin, proud—their pride in him was unwavering.

Travis passed away leaving behind his daughter, Elleigh Mae McKinney, her mother Kayla Swanner; his parents, Darin McKinney (Rhonda Friend) and Kina Drury McKinney (Mark Cameron Rogers); his sister Amber Marie McKinney (Kevin Tanner); his aunts Lisa Evans (Jack), Diane Drury (Harold),and Sandra Carol Brown (Cessna); and his uncle Mike Drury. He was also a beloved cousin to Shannon, Hunter, Bradley, Allie, Lisa Renee, Cody, Jim, Jessica, Tony, and Kurtis, and a best friend to Kevin, Taylor, and Michael. He will be lovingly remembered by his best fur buddy, Rex Maximus McKinney.

Travis was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Adam and Jeanette Drury; paternal grandparents, Woodrow and Carolyn McKinney; and his uncle Harold Drury and cousin Harold 'Bub' Drury Jr.

A Mass in memory of Travis will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church in Charlestown, Indiana, on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 11:00 AM.

The loving memory of Travis Lee McKinney will forever resonate in the hearts of his family and friends, who will cherish the moments shared, the belly laughs, and the joy he brought into their lives. If you care to look at his picture you can see the love and compassion he gave with just a smile.
