Suzanne (Kantz) Murphy

June 28, 1931 — September 15, 2023

Charlestown

Suzanne Zehner Murphy, 92 of Charlestown, born in West Lafayette, Indiana passed away Friday, September 15, 2023, at Norton's Brownsboro Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Mildred “Micky” Kantz; husbands Roy L. Zehner, 1985, Robert V Murphy, 2008, companion Bill Cheesman, 2017, and grandson Michael Adam Zehner. She is survived by sons David Zehner of Alaska, and Kevin Zehner (Donna), daughters Pam Shearer, and Kathy Cash (Bruce), many grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her special Bichon' Frieze doggy, Toby. She will be buried with her fork. Suzanne always remarked whenever dishes were being cleared and the host told her to keep her fork, she knew something better was coming. This final trip will be no different. Suzanne was a 63-year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority which recently merged with Beta Zeta Master Sorority, Red Hat Runabouts, Charlestown Historical Society, and North Charlestown Church of God. She was particularly proud of helping raise funds in the '60s for the first public swimming pool at Charlestown High School by going door to door soliciting donations. She worked as a Census Bureau Interviewer during the 1960 Census for all of Clark County while raising a loving family. She and Roy went on to own and operate the Charlestown Motel, worked for Dr. Jones in the 70s, and with Wilma Wampler at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in the 80s, had an incredibly observant sense of humor, and tried to find the good in people and life. She enjoyed her Derby Dinner Playhouse season pass with her daughter Kathy and friends and was also a groupie of The Paul Boggs Band. Suzanne instructed all friends and family that phone calls were not allowed on Monday nights because that would interrupt her Football games. She did crossword puzzles and read books her whole life, loved Reader's Digest, and absolutely had to have the Courier-Journal and Evening News every day. She stayed sharp up until the end, was rarely ill, and died suddenly. She was a blessing to all of us and will be missed. I feel very fortunate and grateful to have had such a wonderful grandmother for fifty-three years. She sometimes vacationed with us, spent Labor and Memorial Days with us, and of course Holidays. Too many memories to list here will stay with me for the rest of my life. Love you Mamaw, see you soon, but hopefully not too soon, lol. This obituary was lovingly summitted by Suzanne's grandson Bruce.  Life Celebration Services will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 11:30 A.M. at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown with burial in Charlestown Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Wednesday from 1:00 to 8:00 P.M. and after 9:00 A.M. Thursday
