Rowena Witten Gatheridge, 92, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Scott Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Grayson Co., KY on February 15, 1919 to Stanley and Stella Powell Witten. She was married for 67 years to William Gatheridge, and attended Charlestown High School. She worked at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin, IN from 1938-1940. She then later worked at the Charlestown Post Office, and as worked as a forelady on the black powder lines at the arsenal during WWII. She married T/Sgt. William Gatheridge and lived in Henryville, IN on a farm. She had one son, Robert Gatheridge who attended high school there. Later she moved to Greensburg, IN where they built an apartment complex. Rowena’s husband was a Baptist minister that served in five different churches in Southern Indiana. Rowena and her husband bought and moved to a farm near Lexington, IN where they lived for 40 years. She was a member of the Henryville First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, she was a member of the G.A. Girls organizer group.

Survivors include her husband, William Gatheridge; son, Robert Gatheridge of Lexington, IN; sister, Laura Amos of Lexington, IN; brothers, Gene Witten of Louisville, KY, and Marshall Witten of Jeffersonville, IN; 3 Granddaughters, 1 Grandson, and 11 Great-Grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 11am at the First Baptist Church in Henryville, with burial in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2pm to 8pm at the Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown, and after 9:30am on Saturday at the church.
