Robert "Bob" Reynolds

August 17, 1940 — May 26, 2024

Charlestown

Robert Allen Reynolds passed away peacefully with his family at Baptist Floyd Hospital on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Bob, son of Bill and Lois Reynolds, was born on August 17, 1940 in Houston, TX.  After spending his youth in Gary, Indiana, Bob graduated from Lew Wallace High School and went on to study chemical engineering at Purdue University.  As part of his service in the Purdue Navy ROTC, Bob entered the Navy and served aboard the USS Rankin during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Bob married Bonnie Hildebrand in 1966.  After earning both a JD and MBA from Indiana University in 1967, Bob went on to work in many places.  Bob worked for WR Grace & Company in Paramonga, Peru and as manager of a shrimp packing plant in Brownsville, TX.  He then began his 41-year career with DuPont in Richmond, VA, St. Louis, MO, Lawrence, KS, and Louisville, KY.

Bob was the dedicated father to Lisa and Mike.  He served as Boy Scout leader, church youth leader, constant educator, entertainer, and protector to his children.  He believed all children should have what his kids had and would spend much time facilitating the participation of those close to him after his children had grown up.  For 54 years, Bob and Bonnie invited young people from other countries into their homes, resulting in lasting relationships worldwide.  This includes the entire extended Amaya family, from El Salvador, who have become interwoven into their own family.

After spending his last 32 years with DuPont working in Louisville, Bob retired to Charlestown, IN.  Bob became a member of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Charlestown, serving as treasurer for 20 years. After its closure, he joined the First Methodist Church in Charlestown.  Bob and his wife Bonnie were co-organizers of English as a second language classes for many years.  Bob had a post-retirement career as an organizer of tax services and financial counselor.

Bob is preceded in death by parents, beloved aunt and uncles, daughter Lisa, and very close cousin Jim.  He is survived by wife of 58 years Bonnie Hildebrand Reynolds, son Mike (Sarah Bone) Reynolds, brothers Don (Heide) Reynolds, Dick (Kathy) Reynolds, and sister Gail (Bill) McKaig, eight nieces and nephews, five great-nieces and nephews, “adopted” grandsons Bryan and Marlon and many other members of the extended Amaya family, and Bella.

Bob will be remembered for always wanting to help others, especially young people, and making us all  laugh constantly.
