Robert “Bobby” Mathews Jr., a faithful servant of God, proud veteran, and devoted community leader, gained his heavenly wings on September 16, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born on March 14, 1937, to the late Anne Dee Griffin Mathews and Robert C. Mathews Sr.
Bobby loved learning and pursued higher education, earning an Associate’s Degree in Accounting. He also proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, living out a deep sense of honor, discipline, and patriotism.
Beyond his career and military service, Bobby dedicated his life to serving others. He gave generously of his time and talents through volunteer work with the American Red Cross, where his commitment to helping others shined. He also served on the YMCA Black Achievers Steering Committee and was an active member of the Jaycees.
His outstanding service and selflessness earned him many distinguished honors. In 1981, Bobby was named Outstanding Volunteer. In 1987, he was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel, a high recognition of noteworthy accomplishments and service. He was later designated an Honorary Secretary of State, the highest award reserved for a select group of individuals who went above and beyond in service to others. In 1992, he received the prestigious Bell Award, further reflecting his life’s motto of giving more than he received.
At the center of Bobby’s life was his unwavering faith. A devoted member of Little Flock Missionary Baptist Church, he served diligently on the Usher Board, greeting each person with a warm smile and a servant’s heart. He loved his church family and found great joy in being a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord.
Bobby’s life was filled with love, humility, and service. His legacy will be remembered not only through his many honors and community impact, but also through the kindness, compassion, and faith he lived out daily.
Though he will be deeply missed, his family and friends find peace in knowing he has entered into eternal rest, greeted with the words: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:23)
