Martha Ellen Gammons, a beloved and kind-hearted woman known for her helpful nature and deep love of animals, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Born on October 8, 1947, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Martha led a life marked by warmth, generosity, and devotion to her family and community.
Martha had a passion for gardening and genealogy, pursuits that reflected her nurturing spirit and strong appreciation for roots and heritage. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and worked with the Sons of the American Revolution. She worked for years in Louisville Metro government, including the Air Pollution Control District. She was also a member of the RCAC, demonstrating her commitment to service and community involvement. She made annual donations to the Kentucky Humane Society.
Martha is survived by her husband, Gerald Douglas Gammons, who stood by her side through all seasons of life. She also leaves behind a son, Glenn A. (Carly) Porzig, as well as her stepdaughter Dawna M. (Ralf) Kussman and her grandson James S. (Amber) Johnston. Her siblings whom she deeply loved and who still carry her memory in their hearts include Raymond M. (Sharon) Coffman, Mary Angela Anderson, Mary Teresa Wallace, and Rebekah Jane Coffman.
She was preceded in death by her siblings Joseph E. Coffman, Phoebe Anne Coffman, and Jeffrey Stephen Coffman, whose memories remain precious to her surviving family.
Friends and family will gather to honor Martha’s life at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown, Indiana. Visitation will be held on June 3, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed immediately by her funeral service from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The funeral home is located at 893 High Street, Charlestown, IN 47111.
Martha Ellen Gammons was a person who touched the lives of many with her kindness and generosity. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she enriched, the family she dearly loved, and the community she served. She will be remembered with profound respect and affection by all who knew her.
