Leona E. (Dabney) Stapleton

Leona E. Dabney, Ison, Stapleton, was born to Chester and Edna Dabney in Owen, IN on March 27, 1925, the second of nine children. She grew up in a poor, rural family and at age twelve she went to live with a prominent Hibernia family. She was there to help with boarders who were building the IN-Army Ammo Plant.

A pretty, vibrant girl, she won the Clark County Spelling Bee and church pie suppers before graduating from New Washington High. She married Hassell Ison and moved to Charlestown IN. where she had Sharon in 1943 and Byron in 1946. Later they moved to Jeffersonville, divorced and she continued to raise her children there. Leona retired from General Electric, where she had met and married Douglas Stapleton (deceased 2004) in 1955. She vacationed with her family throughout the US. Later, she traveled to Europe twice, once flying on the SST Concord. She went to Mexico, Canada, Central America, and the Caribbean. Leona loved to read about science, medicine, and history. She sent her son to KMI, and then both her children to I.U.

The consummate lady, she always wore skirt suits and high heels. Her family and friends always looked forward to her holiday dinners with all the cakes and pies, especially the coconut cream.

Leona is survived by her children, Sharon (Michael) Wasdovich and Byron (Brenda) Ison; grandchildren, Michael, Mark (Elke), Megan, Rich, Tammie (Matthew) and Hannah; great and great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.Also, brothers, Delbert and Douglas Dabney.

She will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at 12:00 pm in the chapel of Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown. Visitation will also be on Saturday, from 10:00 until the service time. Burial will follow in Charlestown Cemetery.
