Lena Rae (Lyons) Hammond, born April 13, 1938, entered into eternal rest on September 24, 2025 at the age of 87.
On July 4, 1954, Lena married the love of her life, Thomas Hammond (Tom). Their union was one built on faith, devotion, and a steadfast love that carried them through 58 beautiful years together until Tom’s passing in 2012. Their marriage, marked by the symbolism of Independence Day, was a true celebration of freedom, family, and love—a partnership that set the foundation for generations to come.
Lena’s proudest role was that of wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She and Tom raised five children together: Tommy (Jane), Michael “Mike” (Becky), Deina (Rusty), Debbie (Mike), and Ronald “Ron” (Michelle). Through them, her legacy blossomed into nine grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren—each of whom was touched by her kindness, laughter, and love.
Her home was the heart of the family, filled with warmth, joy, and the aroma of her legendary peanut butter fudge—a recipe so cherished it became a symbol of her care and devotion. Lena was a woman of quiet strength and grace, who showed her family the importance of compassion, togetherness, and living with joy.
Though she now joins Tom in eternal rest, Lena’s spirit lives on in the traditions she created, the family she cherished, and the countless lives she touched. Her love story with Tom continues as a guiding light for all who knew them, reminding us that true love is timeless and family is forever.
As scripture promises: “Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord” (Matthew 25:23). Lena has gone home, reunited with Tom, and together they rest in God’s eternal embrace.
Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her legacy will live forever in the hearts of those who loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Franklin Lyons and Ina Bell Lyons, siblings, Ornal “Elwood” Lyons, Dorothy Smith, Rachel Campell, and a beloved grandson, Cole Ryan Harl.
Her visitation will be at Charlestown Independent Church, 9575 IN-62, Charlestown on Saturday, September 27 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm with her funeral service at noon.
