Lawrence A. “Tom” Schafer, 82 passed away peacefully at his home Friday December 14, 2012. He was born on June 27, 1930 in Charlestown, IN to Ernest and Mary Margaret Meyer Schafer. He was a farmer and cattleman. He had also been employed at the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant and by the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service, and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He loved Family, hard work, and wine making. He was the 1986 Clark County Soil and Water Conservation District Farmer of the Year, a founding member of the Clark Co Cattleman’s Association, a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, the former Marie J. Hecker; daughters: Teresa Anderson (Joe), Sharon Hubbard (Wayne), and Joann Ettel (Dennis); son Lawrence Schafer, Jr. (Dina); sister Mary Lou Yount; son-in-law Gregg Harper; nieces , nephews, 14 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and step father Herman DeVary, brother, John Schafer, and his daughter Mary Suzanne Harper.
His Funeral Mass will be held at 10am on Tuesday December 18th at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 101 Saint Michaels Drive in Charlestown, IN with burial to follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday December 17 from 1pm to 8pm and after 9am on Tuesday at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown. Expressions of Sympathy can be made to St. Michael’s Building Fund.
