Lawrence Curtis Lyons, a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and respected member of the Charlestown community, passed away on March 30, 2026, in Charlestown, Indiana. Born on November 21, 1929, in Apalona, Indiana, Mr. Lyons lived a life marked by hard work, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to family and community.
Lawrence was known for his industrious nature and his willingness to give not just his love, but also his time and extensive knowledge. He owned and operated his own auto body repair shop, where he distinguished himself through excellence and mentorship, guiding several future repairmen in their careers. His generous spirit extended beyond his business; Lawrence, along with his sons, brother-in-law Maefiel James, and his sons, Steve and Dan James, completed a remarkable total of seven houses—2 of which were Lawrence's own, a testament to his dedication and skill.
A man of strong character and principle, Lawrence served in the Army with honor. He was stationed in Germany during World War II and later served during the Korean War. His military service was a fundamental part of his life and reflected his commitment to the greater good.
Lawrence’s interests reflected his love of life and community. He enjoyed working in his garden, camping in Brown County and Little Nashville, and traveling to places like Branson, Missouri, and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. His passion for preservation and history was evident in his restoration of the old church bell from the Morrow Street church, which is now located at the back of St. Michael Church. He also played a significant role in placing the rock with the plaque naming St. Michael Cemetery. These contributions have left a lasting mark on his local community.
Among his proudest accomplishments was being chosen to carry the Indiana Bicentennial State Torch through Charlestown in 2016 at the remarkable age of 86. He was also honored with the St. John Bosco Award, served as the president of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) at St. Michael, coached Little League while his children played, and was a steadfast supporter of his grand and great-grandchildren's youth sports activities.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Iva Jane Lyons; his brothers Eugene, John, Russell, Arnold, and David Lyons; and his sisters Gladys James, Marjorie Betz, Edith Neyenhaus, and Dorothy Lyons. He also endured the sorrowful loss of his granddaughter, Amanda Stahl.
He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Rovilla A. Lyons, who stood by his side throughout a lifetime of shared memories and love. Lawrence’s devoted children include Joanie (Robin) Roberts, Becky (Larry) Stahl, Jerry (Debbie) Lyons, Darrell (Margaret) Lyons, and Doug (Tami) Lyons. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Katherine, Chris (Anne), Ben (Abby), Christie (Adam), Sarah (Shawn), Mary, Aimee (Adam), Matt (Kayla), Tyler (Anna), and Brandon (Hayley). He was also a proud great-grandfather to Aubrey, Caroline, Bella, John, Garrett, Kimber, Drew, Reese, Remie, Jason, Sawyer, Walker, Hudson, and Lincoln.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 6, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown, Indiana, and again on Tuesday from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM also at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Michael Catholic Church, where he was a longstanding and active parishioner. Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in Charlestown.
Expressions of love and sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Michael Church or Hosparus of Southern Indiana.
