Listen to Obituary

Laura Mercedes Boyer, 91, was born August 3, 1934 in Madison, Indiana to Clyde Consley Boyer and Dorcas Willyard Boyer. She grew up on her parent’s farm along with her late sisters, Celia Bernice Boyer and Frieda Boyer Morgan. Upon graduation from Greenbriar, she attended college at Old Miss transferring after two years to George Washington University in Washington DC where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa, much to her surprise. She taught and continued her education with a Masters from the University of Denver and another in Library Science from Peabody. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was head of the Reference Department at the Holt Library at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. She then was on the faculty at California State University, Stanislaus in Turlock, California retiring as a professor. She assisted scores of graduate students working on their dissertations. She was extremely well liked by her students.

Each summer she joined her family in Indiana. She took her nephew and two nieces on adventures, once almost getting lost in the woods! They enjoyed exploring Wyandotte and Squire Boone Caverns.

Then, early on the morning of August 15, 2025, she slipped away into Heaven. She is gloriously worshiping our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, where she's reunited with all those who went before. Her loved ones look forward to the time when they will all be reunited in Heaven for eternity. Finally, she is survived by her nephew, Charles Frederick Morgan; her great-nephew, Samuel Frederick Morgan of Las Vegas, Nevada, her nieces, Laura Adelaide Morgan of Las Vegas, Nevada and Margaret Morgan Bouche, of Farmington, New Mexico. She is deeply missed, but it is only for a time. “In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you”.

A graveside service will be in Charlestown Cemetery on Friday, November 7, 2025, at 2:00 PM. Memories of Laura and messages of support for the family can be shared at www.GraysonFuneralHome.com.
