Kynard Leland Taff

d. August 27, 2009

Mr. Taff passed away Aug. 24, 2009. He was born Dec. 17, 1915. He was known as "Taff" or "KL" to his many friends, graduated Charlestown High School, where he met his lifelong companion and wife Margaret Louise Ross. He graduated from Central Normal College, and taught in the country schools in Clark and Scott counties and was the Charlestown Township Trustee during the building of Charlestown High School. Ever a hard worker, he pumped gas, and drove trucks nights and weekend for extra earnings. He served in the Navy during WW II, partnered with his father to build a Texaco service station and Goodyear store at Main and Market Streets in Charlestown. He founded Taff's Gas Service and Gas Marketers and Transporters, both related to the LP Gas Industry. Taff was one of the founders of Charlestown Industrial Park and also founded Sunset Acres Construction, a real estate and home construction firm.
He was a farmer as well as a business man, loved the land, and was once the Clark County soil conservation farmer of the year. He also ran a business providing custom fertilizer for farmers. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a 32nd degree Shriner, a member of the Scottish Rite, and a long time member of the 1st Methodist Church of Charlestown, where he served on several committees over the years. Taff had great business skills and loved anything mechanical, especially cars, trucks, and anything with an engine in it. He was mowing on a large farm tractor at the time of his death, and working on his farm right up to the very end. He will certainly be greatly missed by his friends spanning many ages, as well as his surviving family.
He is survived by his wife Margaret Louise Ross Taff; children Gerry Taff (Nellie), Mary Cook ( Tom), Tom Taff (Marti); grandchildren Julie Thompson (Jeff), Kevin Taff (Talaina), Cristie Haire ( Travis), Annette DeWitt (Dr. John), and Tracy Cook; great-grandchildren Caroline and Candace Thompson, Victoria Haire, Kayla Taff, Stephen and Rachel DeWitt.
He was preceded in death by his parents Tracy and Verna Taff and step-father Arthur Cox, and son Billy.
