Kathryn L. (Zehner) Cash age 75 of Charlestown Indiana passed away peacefully on August 10, 2026, at her home on Level Street. Kathy was born in Lafayette IN, on July 29, 1951, to Roy L. and Suzanne (Kantz) Zehner.
Kathy graduated from Charlestown High in 1969. On May 5, 1969, she altered the date on her birth certificate to elope with Bruce E. Cash in Elizabethtown, KY. When she called home, her mother was crying her eyes out. Kathy protested, “Mom, he’s not that bad!”. Suzanne replied she wasn’t upset about her running off and marrying Bruce, she was upset because her dog had just been killed by a car.
She was a member of North Charlestown Church of God for 57 years. From 1982 to 1992 she was the founder and leader of the Koinonia Youth Group. At its height, attendance reached almost one hundred. She planned lock-ins, skate parties, fund-raisers, and in between was positive, loving influence for the teens in her care.
She worked at the B&T Drugstore lunch counter and J.C. Penney’s in the Greentree Mall before she and Bruce bought Cash & Carry Convenience store on the corner of Hwy 3 and First Street in Charlestown. After they sold it in 1985, she was employed at PNC Bank, Midwest Lumber, and retired from Edward Jones. She also sat on the Charlestown City Council when the Families Activities Center was approved and opened.
Kathy was preceded in death by both parents, her nephew, Michael Adam Zehner and her niece Karen Johnson of Port Richey, Florida. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Bruce, two sons Bruce (Leah) of Charlestown, Bryan (Maria) full-time travelers, three grandchildren, Ashton Cash (Dennis Dahle) of Eugene Oregon, Ella Cash, and Edward Cash, both of Charlestown, sister, Pam Shearer of Charlestown, and brothers, David Zehner of North Pole, Alaska, Kevin Zehner (Donna) of Charlestown. She will also be sorely missed by her lifelong friend Peggy (Kisor) Moses. They shared a love of Wint-O-Green Life Savers.
Kathy loved butterflies, turtles, children and spending time with her family. She tried to accept people where they were and make the world a better place. She leaves behind a legacy of love to her family and friends, who will miss her very much, and an example of a life well lived to a community she cherished.
Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown, and again on Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 10 am until the service time of 2 pm also at Grayson's.
