John L. Heal, a beloved member of the Charlestown community, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025, in Clarksville, Indiana, at the age of 78. Born on June 24, 1947, in Charlestown, he was a lifelong resident of this area where he cultivated deep connections with family, friends, and neighbors.
John’s career was anchored in his talented craftsmanship as a first-class painter. After beginning his career at Jeff Boat, he took the brave step of opening his own painting company. His dedication and skill allowed him to beautify several businesses and residences around Charlestown. Notably, his reputation for excellence meant that he never needed to advertise; his clients came solely through word of mouth, a testament to both his professional abilities and personal character.
He graduated from New Washington High School and carried a jovial spirit into every aspect of his life. Known for his playful nature, John was a jokester who loved to cut up and have fun. He thrived on conversation and had a remarkable ability to connect with others; he truly never met a stranger. John was not only a devoted family man but also a passionate community member, committed to making Charlestown a better place for everyone.
Among his many interests, John enjoyed sipping coffee while sharing stories and laughter, taking walks, and teasing those he loved. His faith was a cornerstone of his life as he taught Sunday school and led Bible studies, nurturing the spiritual lives of many.
John's contributions to his community were significant and deeply respected. He was a proud founding member of the Charlestown Beautification Committee and dedicated volunteer at North Clark Outreach Center. As a member of the Lions Club in Charlestown, he served his community with enthusiasm. He also lent his expertise by serving on the Charlestown Planning and Zoning Board and the board of the Charlestown Housing Authority, as well as being a board member of Love's Endeavor Inc. His commitment to service was a reflection of his desire to give back to the community he loved.
John leaves behind his cherished family: his beloved wife of 60 years Geraldine Heal; daughter Dawn Holmes; sons John P. Heal and his spouse Kelly, and Andre Heal; grandchildren Gabriel Grayson and his spouse Kasey, Alyssa Bays and her spouse Levi, Lachlan Heal, and Maura Heal; as well as great-grandchildren Shayla Grayson and Aidan Grayson. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, stepfather, and sister.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate John’s remarkable life and the joy he brought into the world. Visitation will be held at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life beginning at 11:00 AM.
