John P. Bowen, born August 19, 1934, passed March 28, 2026. John P. Bowen graduated from high school in Charlestown and attended two years at Indiana University Southeast. He was a bank examiner for the state of Indiana for ten years. He was a Sunday school teacher for several years at Charlestown Christian Church and Blue Lick Christian Church, and was a member of Stony Point Christian Church. John also wrote a book called Why I Believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and Why You Should Too. He was President of the First Bank of Charlestown for fifteen years. He was President of the New Washington State Bank for fifteen years and a director of that bank for five years after retirement. He was a board member of the North Clark Community Hospital for four years and served as head of the fundraising to start the hospital. John was a twenty-year member of the Charlestown Lions Club, served two years as President of the New Hope School, with the goal of getting professional school teachers and educators on the board, and two years in the now-defunct Optimist Club. He was President of the now-defunct Southern Indiana Installment Loan Association and served as President of Region 7 of the Indiana Bankers Association.
He is survived by his wife Jeanie Couch Bowen; sons Frank (Kimberly) and William (Eun Gean), and daughter Janice Jones (William); grandchildren Patrick Bowen (Leeza), Stephanie Doyle (Brandon), Amanda Webb (Joshua), and Tim Bowen; and great-grandchildren Madelyn Doyle, Annalee Doyle, and Thomas Bowen. He was predeceased by his son James Bowen; brothers Robert Bowen, James Bowen, and J.P. Bowen; and sisters Mary Ann Crismore and Marjorie Pieper.
The family will receive friends and loved ones on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, from 5 PM until 8 PM at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown. Life Celebration services will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2026, beginning at 11 AM at Stony Point Christian Church in Charlestown.
The family respectfully asked that expressions of love and sympathy be made in the form of donations to Stony Point Christian Church, in care of LaVon Couch, 5814 Salem Noble Rd. Charlestown, IN 47111.
