James "The Whittler" Edward Watson, of Charlestown, IN, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026, in Louisville, KY, surrounded by his family. Born on January 12, 1944, Jim lived a life marked by steadfast determination, creativity, and a rich tapestry of stories and passions that enriched everyone who knew him.

Jim graduated from Charlestown High School in 1962 before proudly serving in the United States Army. His commitment to his country was lifelong, reflected in his active membership with the American Legion in New Albany, IN, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). After his military service, Jim dedicated his working years to the Army Ammunition Plant in Charlestown, IN, where he contributed with unwavering diligence.

Known affectionately as "The Whittler," Jim’s extraordinary talent in woodworking was a hallmark of his life. His skill with rattle making, boot carving, white oak baskets, chair caning, and refinishing antique furniture spoke not only of his craftsmanship but also his patience and passion. His extensive movie collection, love for Elvis Presley, antique collecting, and his joy in dancing to country music during weekends portrayed the lively spirit and zest for life he carried throughout his years. Many fondly remember his feature on the local news channel, celebrating his impressive wood carving abilities.

Jim was a strong-willed, fiercely independent man, distinguished by his firm handshake, a testament to years spent whittling. He was a gifted storyteller who delighted in recollecting tales of his childhood, captivating those fortunate enough to listen. His interests ranged from cooking and fishing to basket making, trading pocket knives, and savoring the best deals—a true reflection of a man who appreciated the art of living fully.

Family was at the center of Jim’s heart. He was immensely proud of raising two sons and watching his family grow around him. He is lovingly remembered by his sons Jeremy Watson and his wife Mary, along with their children; Chris Turner and his wife Lyndee, Zachary and Xander Stepp and great-grandkids Greyson and Parker; and his other son James Lee Watson and his wife Angie, with their children Joshua (Miranda), Kelly (Zac) Brooks, Jennifer (Matthew) Stamp, Duece Murphy, and great-grandkids Braxden, Walker, Jaxen, Luke, Lillian, and Loralie. He is also survived by his brothers Ronnie Watson and David Watson.

He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Edward Watson; his mother, Helen Louise Nash Watson; his sister, Loretta Watson Adkins; and his cherished companion, his beloved fur baby, Baby Girl.
