James D. Nichols, Sr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 17, 2026, in Charlestown, Indiana. He was born on March 1, 1936, in Cawood, Kentucky, to Steve and Daisy Nichols, who preceded him in death.
James dedicated over 21 years to his country, serving in the United States Army, where he retired as First Sergeant. His military career included two tours in Vietnam, one in Korea, and ten years stationed in Germany. He was proud of his service and the discipline and dedication it instilled in him.
Throughout his life, James was known for his warm and caring nature. He was well-loved and liked by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He deeply cared about his family and the people around him, always making time for those in need.
In addition to his military accomplishments, James was immensely proud of the family he raised. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Irene Collins Nichols; his sons, James Jr. and wife Lisa and Terry and wife Cindy Nichols; and his grandchildren, Dayna Nichols-Frazier and husband, Blaine, Dylan Nichols, Amber Mattingly, and Collin McCormick. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, Drayden Nichols, Julie, and Chloe Harmon.
James enjoyed a variety of hobbies that enriched his life and brought joy to his family. He loved camping and fishing and could often be found watching football and basketball or playing cards with friends and family.
He is also survived by his siblings Harold and Dolly Nichols, Bill and Catherine Nichols, Peggy Burden, Ruth Troutman, Mavis Hershey, and Eddie (Lanae) Nichols, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his siblings, Enos Nichols, Steve Nichols Jr., Betty Burns, Cathy Gillespie, and Jewel Keaton.
A visitation will be held at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown on Sunday, February 22, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by another visitation on Monday, February 23 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM with his funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Charlestown Cemetery.
James D. Nichols, Sr.'s legacy will forever be remembered through the love he fostered, both within his family and throughout his community. His life was a testament to the values of service, care, and dedication. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
