James E. Britt, a devoted family man, skilled cook, and cherished member of his community, passed away on June 8, 2026, in Scottsburg, Indiana. Born on September 3, 1963, in Charlestown, Indiana, James lived a life marked by resilience, humor, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
Attending Jeffersonville High School, James carried with him the values and spirit that shaped his early years throughout his entire life. His career as the head cook at Perkins Restaurant and Po Folks reflected his passion for both his craft and the satisfaction of those who enjoyed his meals. To many, he was not just a great cook but a generous soul who would go to great lengths for friends and family alike.
James served his country with honor as a combat medic in the National Guard, a role he held with great pride. This service was among his proudest accomplishments, alongside creating a stable home and securing his own truck—milestones that symbolized his independence and determination.
Those who knew James fondly remember his laid-back personality and sharp sense of humor. He found joy in nature, animals, gardening, fishing, and hunting. His love for sports, especially NASCAR and football, was well-known among his circle. Many recall his endearing motto, "Shiny Side up, Greasy side down," which perfectly encapsulated his outlook on life. Tales of his adventurous spirit—such as the time he taught his nephew Christopher to swim by tossing him into a pond, surviving a tornado with his brother Robbie while fishing on the Ohio River, and catching a massive 100-pound snapping turtle that bit an oar in half—are treasured memories that illustrate the vibrancy and boldness of his character.
James is survived by his son, James Bowyer, and his brothers, Eddie (Staci) Gordon and Robbie (Megan) Stidham. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and their spouses who hold dear the moments shared with him. He loved his friends and family deeply and was always willing to lend a helping hand or offer his support without hesitation.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elwood Britt; mother, Linda Stidham; brother, David Britt; stepfather, Robert Stidham; and nephew, Charles Britt. Their memories remain an integral part of the fabric of James’s life and the fond remembrance of all who knew him.
James E. Britt’s life was a testament to the values of loyalty, kindness, and courage. He will be remembered for his strength in adversity, his warm nature, and his enduring love for the world around him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit lives on in the hearts and stories of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Visitation will be at Grayson Funeral Home, 893 High Street, on Sunday, June 14 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm with his funeral service beginning at 2:00. Burial will take place in Crown Hill Cemetery.
