Iven Ray May

June 3, 1940 — December 11, 2024

Charlestown

Iven Ray May was taken from this world on December 11, 2024, at the age of 84.  Throughout his life, he was known as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son, whose heart of gold and quick wit charmed anyone who he crossed paths.

Born on June 3, 1940, in Charlestown, Indiana to Iven J. May and Joy May (Hutsell), he attended New Washington High School before joining the United States Navy and earning his diploma while stationed in Long Beach, CA.  After moving back to Indiana, he met his wife Mary Jo May in 1968 at Olin Mathieson Chemical Plant where they both were employed.  They moved to California, where he worked at Reynolds Metal which took them to Houston, and then ultimately back to Indiana where he worked for Fire King International.  He also owned a small trucking company out of Floyd Knobs, Indiana.  In his retirement, he got to spend time with his son Sean May making custom motorcycle frames that they sold online.  He was truly a jack of all trades.

Iven enjoyed antiquing with his wife, where he was always on the hunt for Cambridge Rosepoint Glassware.  He loved spending time with his granddaughters and playing pool and horseshoes with his son and grandsons.  His favorite thing to do was to get out and golf with his friends and family.

Iven is preceded in death by his son Sean Christian May, father, Iven J. May, Mother, Joy May, brothers, Juston (Juck) May, Anthony (Tony) May, and sisters, Aleta Parker, Rowena Ashby, Iris Irish, Fleeta Very and Linda May.  He is survived by his wife of 56 years Mary Jo May (Mauldin); sons, Rodney Ray May and Rob May; daughters, Laura Murphy, Tina Minch, and Tamela Wellock; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter along with all of his nieces and nephew.

Iven was known for having a wonderful, loving personality and being quite the jokester.  He loved a good western moving, loved Mary Jo’s cooking, and he’d give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.
