Irma L Smith

Irma L Smith, born on January 6, 1930, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, journeyed peacefully from this world on August 10, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky. Hers was a life marked by profound love, quiet determination, and an enduring spirit that touched and shaped the generations she cherished.

The daughter of Orville Moore and Zella Brison Moore, Irma inherited both a steadfast resilience and a gentle compassion that became the enduring themes of her long life. Raised alongside her siblings, Lavaughn Burdin, Jeanette Bielas, and Deb Moore, Irma wove loyalty and warmth into the tapestry of her family, creating a home that welcomed laughter and weathered sorrow with grace.

Irma found an abiding partnership with her late husband, Melvin Smith. The legacy she created now flourishes in the lives of Irma's surviving children: her daughters Janice Raney (Terry), and Dedra Graebe; her sons Donald Jones and Ronald Jones (Retha); and her beloved daughters-in-law Shirley Jones and Barbara Jones.

Both joy and heartbreak seasoned Irma’s life. She was predeceased by her sons Dennis Jones and Charles Jones, her dear son-in-law Steve Graebe, her cherished daughter-in-law Regina Jones, and her grandson, JR Jones.

Her legacy finds its truest voice in her 15 grandchildren, Denny Ray Jones, Shane Bramble (Danili), Stephanie Taylor (Clayton), Josh Bramble (Christie), Jamie Jones (Shelly), Tonna Soliday (Darren), Jennifer Horton (Larry), Randy Clift (Lauren), Brad Jones (Robin), Brian Jones (Emily), Shannon Ottersbach (Richie), Brandie Conlen (Scott), Brittany Jones-Kinder (Clayton), and John Jones (Alyssa) and granddaughter-in-law, Tish Jones; 29 great grandchildren; Deklan Bramble (Natalie), Kavan Bramble, Drew Jones, Brandon Horton, Sophia Bramble, Jessica Cherry (Brandon), Ryan Jones (Morgan), Shelby Jones (Will), Jared Jones (Katey), Jacob Jones, Raelynn Soliday, Shelbie Johnson, Garrett Krouse (Tiffany), Gracie King (Dalton), Mackenzie Krouse, Haleigh Graves (Chad), Riley Clift, Brady Clift, Dailey Clift, Emma Jones, Peyton Jones, Maddie Conlen, Lilly Kinder, Presley Kinder, Ellie Kinder, Charlie Kinder, Asher Jones, Aspen Jones, and Grant Taylor; 10 great-great-grandchildren; Lane Cherry, Kinsley Cherry, Bronx Jones, Hallie Jones, Houston Krouse, Brooklyn Sexton, Cash Shepherd, Charlee Krouse, Kohen Krouse, Jolene King and Kolten Traub; and dear family friend, Kathy Cavendish whose faithful presence was a comfort to Irma, a testament to the life she led.

Those who knew Irma remember not only her devotion to family, but the wonderful meals shared at the table, her hands steadily at work making dumplings, dressing, jam cake, salmon cakes, and her peanut butter fudge, and precious memories. She could be found sitting in the yard tending to her flowers, occasionally taking a trip to the gambling boat for a little fun, but most often spending time with her family playing Wahoo, a game she enjoyed from her childhood.

Family and friends will gather to honor Irma’s life at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown, where visitation will take place on Monday, August 17, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and again on Tuesday, August 18, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. on August 18. Irma will then be laid to rest a Hibernia Cemetery.
