Mr. Hayes entered into rest on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at the Kindred Sellersburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born on April 27, 1918, in Caneyville, KY, to W.R. and Janie Davis Hayes. He was blessed with a large, loving family that included eight brothers and four sisters all of whom have preceded him in death.
Hilbert was a graduate of the Class of 1936 at Caneyville High School. Hilbert was married to, Helen Ingram, on December 21, 1938 in Aberdeen, KY. He was the loving father of three children: Phillip Rogers Hayes (Kay) of Jeffersonville; Linda Pennington (Dennis) of New Washington and Karen Jackson (Stewart) of Bethlehem. He was grandfather to six grandchildren: Janna O'Leary (Tom), Michael Rogers Hayes (Tammy), Jody Schindler, Andrea Pennington, Christi Mullins (Josh) and Lucas Jackson. He was known as "Great Hayes" to eight wonderful great-grandchildren: Morgan, Phillip Rogers II, Anna and John Michael Hayes, Kaitlyn and Collin Schindler, Jack O'Leary and Calvin Mullins.
Hilbert and Helen moved to Louisville in 1940 when Hilbert went to work with the construction crew building the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant. After its completion and the entering of the United States in World War II, Hilbert stayed on to work at the plant. He retired in 1981 from Spaulding Linen Service of Louisville.
Hilbert was very community-minded and loved the town of Marysville where he lived for fifty-six years. He spent many happy hours with his friends at Marysville Hardware. He was instrumental in the renovation of the Marysville Elementary School into the Marysville Community Center.
He was a member of the Marysville Christian Church for fifty-four years where he served as a deacon and trustee. He had served as a board member of Clark Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Woodmen of the World at Caneyville.
He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends to celebrate his life and memory.
