Helen Melton, 101, of Charlestown, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
She was born on February 23, 1924, in Burkesville, KY to the late Hershel and Ennice Coop. Helen lived a long and fulfilling life centered on faith, family, and the joy of caring for others.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Haskel; her daughter, Janice Rowland; her granddaughters, Lauren Marie Stewart, Kayla Michelle Stewart, and Kimberly Nicole Stewart Aquino; her brothers, Fred, Ray, and Willie Coop; her sister, Marie Cantrell; and her son-in-law, Bill Tackett.
She is survived by her daughters, Charlotte Phillips (Jim), Debra Tackett (Bill), and Tina Edmonds; her sister, Betty Jo Coop; her grandchildren, Scott Phillips (Brooke), Jason Phillips, Ashley Rowland, Allison Rowland, Alexander Rowland, Kevin Stewart, Abby Hernden (Daniel), and Jenna Tackett (Kendall); and her great-grandchildren, David Aquino, Brayden Mayfield, and Annabelle Sheets. She is also survived by Janice’s husband, Phil Rowland, who remained a devoted part of the family, and her longtime friend, Doris Propes Solomon.
Helen lived a life rich with love and laughter. She was passionate about basketball—cheering for both men’s and women’s teams, with Indiana University as her favorite, though she never failed to follow U of L and UK as well. She was a talented cook who showed her love through her meals, an accomplished seamstress, and a devoted homemaker who took pride in making her home warm and welcoming. In quieter moments, she enjoyed reading and working word puzzles. More than anything, Helen found her greatest happiness in seeing her family happy.
The family is especially grateful to Helen’s neighbors at Springville Manor for their friendship and the care they showed by keeping a watchful eye on her. The family would also like to thank her special friends, Susan Case and Patty and John Palmer.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 30, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Grayson Funeral Home, 893 High Street, Charlestown. A Celebration of Helen’s Life will follow at 2:00 p.m., with burial in Charlestown Cemetery.
