Graydon Pryor Abels, 87 passed away peacefully Monday , May 6, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jonathan and Elva Mae Pryor Abels, and in 1994 by his first wife, Dorothy Joan Avant Abels. He is survived by his second wife of 18 years, Ina Lee Moore Ellington Abels of Stillwater, OK; brother, Weldon Long Abels(Carolyn Hill), Columbus, OH; five children, Jay Wayne Abels(Cathy Martin), Keller, TX, Alice Ann Morris(Kerry), Albany, NY, Jack Lawrence Abels(Kathy Payne), Circleville, OH, Thomas Allen Abels(Orianna Moore), Fort Wayne, IN and Timothy Eugene Abels(Chris Hagan), Beaverton, OR; 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Graydon was born March 24, 1926 in Chicago, IL and graduated in 1944 from Oak Park High. He attended Oberlin College (Dentistry) as part of his Navy service (March 13, 1944 to November 2, 1945). He received an Associate of Arts degree in 1947 from North Park College and a B.S. in Education in 1959 from Ashland College.
Graydon was involved in Scouts, sang tenor in the glee club and high school musicals (as a student and teacher), worked in his father’s Oak Park, IL dental X-Ray business (‘42-‘44), was a lab technician for Stanolind Oil & Gas in Tulsa, OK (’47-’50), was a farmer in Ashland, OH (’50-’57), a janitor (’58-’59), a teacher in OK & OH (’59-’88), a school principle (’61-’63), a drivers ed teacher (’70 –’88) and an elder at the Ashland Church of Christ (’70-’94).
Memorial services and burial will be held for Mr. Abels at a later date. Grayson Funeral Home, Charlestown, IN is in charge of arrangements.
