Listen to Obituary

George V. Baird, 95, of Madison, Indiana, and formerly of New Washington, passed away on Monday, October 26, 2026. Born on February 23, 1931, in New Washington, George lived a long and hardworking life marked by service, dedication, and pride in the work he did each day. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and served during the Korean War, a chapter of his life that remained an important part of who he was. In the years that followed, he continued that spirit of commitment through his long-time membership in the American Legion and the VFW.

George was a farmer throughout his entire life. He held a deep admiration for the livestock he raised and took great pride in his work. Farming was not simply a job for him, but a way of life that reflected his steady character, strong work ethic, and respect for the land and animals in his care. In addition to his life in farming, George also worked as a self-taught master electrician at the IKE power plant in Madison, bringing skill and dedication to that role as well. He was also a long-time Trustee of Wirt Baptist Church.

He also found enjoyment in following IU basketball and was known as an avid fan. Alongside his service, his work, and his many years of devotion to farming, that enthusiasm was one more reflection of a life lived with loyalty and genuine interest in the things he valued most. Above all else, George was the most giving man anyone could know and he dearly loved his family.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Baird and Maggie Bower Baird; his son, Kevin Baird; daughter, Pamela Napier; grandchildren, Justin Baird, Micah Courtney, and Hailie Baird; and 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

George is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Vaneda Baird; son, Martin Baird; sister, Lula Jones; grandchildren, Libby (John) Regan, Jackie Baird, Emily (Adam) Bowen, and Taylor (Kaleb) Harmon; great-grandchildren, Julia, Carter, Willow, Lydia, Elijah, Nicole, and Heidi; and his faithful border collie, Chief.
