Elsie Day, 86, of Charlestown, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, just shy of her 87th birthday. She was born on August 23, 1939, in Letcher County, Kentucky.
Elsie's passion for food and caring for others shaped her life's work. She devoted nearly her entire career to food service, where her colleagues and patrons alike soon learned that Elsie had a special touch in the kitchen. Always eager to make things just a little bit better, she was known for finding ways to lovingly improve the recipes. But, more than her skill with a cast iron skillet, it was the warmth and generosity that drew people to Elsie’s table. Her home was known among her family as the favorite gathering place for Sunday suppers-a tradition that created lasting memories for all who were there. She loved to go to yard-sales with Ricky, and loved walking and getting a Diet Coke.
Her love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was boundless. She had a heart of gold, endlessly patient and giving, yet she didn’t hesitate to provide a gentle thump on the head if you happened to be acting up-a signature blend of affection and discipline that only she could deliver with such sincerity.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Noah Fields and Mary Eldridge Fields; son, Ricky Allen Day; siblings, Eunice Frazier, Loren Fields, Kelsie Fields, Nova Adams, and Vivian Frazier; brothers-in-law, Carl Frazier and Lester Tindel
Elsie is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Floyd "Ralph" Day; daughters, Pam Day (Tim Thorpe) and Patty (Doug) Wood; daughter-in-law, Shelia Day; siblings, Opal (Cassel) Boggs, Bonnie Frazier, and Alma Tindel; grandchildren, Jeremy (Melissa) Day, Jeff (Amanda) Day, Nikki (David) Miller, Danni (Aaron) Oakley, Miranda (Darren) Taylor, and Zack Wood (Kagan Jenkins); and great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Grace, Theona, Rylee, Logan, Karlee, Kassius, Rikkee, Leola, Mason, and Murphy.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, August 21, 2026 at Grayson Funeral Home (893 High Street, Charlestown). Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Her Funeral Service will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday, at the funeral home with burial to follow at Charlestown Cemetery.
