Edward Hayes Gerkins

Edward Hayes Gerkins, 95 of Charlestown, IN passed away on Friday, January, 26, 2018 at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, IN.

Mr. Gerkins was born on September 7, 1922 in Meade County, KY the son of Walter Thomas and Jessie McCoy Gerkins. He was a retired Machinist for Naval Ordinance in Louisville for 30 years. Ed was a member of the Charlestown First Baptist Church where he worked with Dare to Care a United States Army Veteran of World War II and enjoyed working in his yard and garden.

Survivors include his son, Paul Mackey and his wife LiEllen of Jeffersonville, IN; sisters, Wanda Halsey of Battle Creek, MI and Ruth Thacker of Columbia, SC; brother Bill Gerkins of Meade County, KY; grandchildren, Brandi, Brian and Liane; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Evan, Clayton, Kyle, Alexis. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Helen Bass Gerkins in 2006; brothers Howard and Norman; sisters, Thelma and Barbara Jean.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1:00 P.M. January 29, 2018 at the Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown with burial in Charlestown Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1:00 to 7:00 P.M. and after 10:00 A.M. Monday. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Gerkins may take the form of donations to First Baptist Church or The Wounded Warrior Project.
