Donald Gene Van Pelt, born January 17, 1937, passed away on July 1, 2025, at the age of 88, surrounded by his loving family. He was born to the late David Myers Van Pelt and Thelma Van Pelt (née Reich) and was preceded in death by his brothers Ron Van Pelt and Rick Sweeney, and his sister Anita Van Pelt-Olson.
Donald is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Betty Van Pelt (née Pressley), with whom he shared a life full of love, laughter, and unwavering faith. The two met in Alabama and built a beautiful legacy together.
He is also survived by his children: David Van Pelt (Jennifer), Lisa Slay (Gary), Mark Van Pelt (Susie), and Donna Duncan (Mark), and his brother John Sweeney; 11 loved and cherished Grandchildren Clyde, Slim, Michael (Ashley), Jarad, Heather (Tramale), Rebecca, David (Lizz), Rachel (Will), Brennan (Brandy), Caitlin (Alex), Andrew (Sidney),17 Adored Great Grandchildren Alexus (Devin), Elijah, Joshua, TaLia, Amya Lisa, Trevin, Ramello Don, Ella Rose, Bria, Jude, Krew, Rhemy, Emersyn, Jaz, Sharee, Baylee, and countless others who were touched by his kindness and generosity.
A gifted carpenter and a true servant at heart, Donald never sat still. He found great joy in the outdoors and even greater joy in quietly helping others. Known for his contagious laugh and gentle spirit, he offered his time selflessly and lived out his faith through action.
Donald was a quiet giver, a strong example of what it means to live with purpose, and a man who raised his family to know and follow God. He taught them that pure joy is found in walking with Him.
Life Celebration Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
