David Ray Long, 84, beloved son, brother, husband father, and grandfather, passed away on June 24, 2026.
A 1959 graduate of Washington High School in Washington, IN, Davey was an accomplished athlete in his youth. He excelled as a diver and earned recognition as a state track and field champion, achievements that reflected the determination he carried throughout his life.
David proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he began his professional career as a radio announcer with WAMW/WFM radio station. At the age of 22, he discovered his true passion for aviation and went on to build a distinguished career as a commercial pilot and flight instructor, logging more than 5,000 hours in the air.
Never one to stop pursuing new opportunities, Dave later became an entrepreneur, designing commercial websites in California. After retiring, he and his beloved wife, Barbara, made their home in Arizona. Most recently, he relocated to Charlestown to be closer to his family.
A man of many talents, Dave had a lifelong love of music. He was an accomplished cornet and trumpet player and often sat in as a guest musician with Dixieland jazz bands. He also enjoyed playing the guitar and piano, sharing his love of music with friends and family whenever he had the opportunity.
His creative spirit extended far beyond music. David was always happiest when making something with his hands. Over the years, he explored painting, sculpture, photography, and most recently, woodworking. His handcrafted bowls, cups, planters, birdhouses, and hair pins reflected both his skill and generous heart. He enjoyed selling many of his creations around town, but one of his greatest pleasures was giving away his handcrafted hair pins to any pretty lady he met, often bringing an unexpected smile to a stranger's day.
David R. Long will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Angela Ann Kuerzi (Joseph) of Corydon and Stacey Michelle Doyle (Joseph) of Charlestown; his brothers, Rodney C. Long (Ginger) of Fishers, John Howard Long of Chattanooga, TN, and Richard H. Long of Boston, MA; six cherished grandchildren; and five treasured great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Robert Long and Hattie Viola (Henry) Zinken, and his beloved wife, Barbara.
David will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, remarkable creativity, generous heart, dedication to his family, and passion for music, flight, and craftsmanship. His life was one of curiosity, service, and kindness, and his legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
