Listen to Obituary

David William Hayes, Sr., a cherished member of the Charlestown community, passed away on October 22, 2025, in Charlestown, Indiana, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on October 15, 1956, in Louisville, Kentucky, David lived a life full of dedication, compassion, and a deep commitment to service.

A proud 1976 graduate of Charlestown High School, David's career spanned many years as a blaster until 1998. His legacy in the community is deeply rooted in his role as a lifetime member of the Charlestown Fire Department, where he served with honor as assistant chief and treasurer. David was not just a firefighter; he embodied the spirit of service, dedicating countless hours to collecting for the Crusade for Children, often foregoing his own passion for hunting to ensure that local children were supported and cared for.

David had a love for the outdoors, cherished moments spent hunting and fishing, and was an avid fan of NASCAR and IU basketball. He particularly enjoyed the camaraderie at deer camp with his children and hunting buddy, Skip Katzman, relishing the joys of nature while checking his trail cam and sharing laughter with friends and family.

David took great pride in his accomplishments, from becoming a firefighter to raising more funds for the Crusade for Children each year than the last. His commitment to making a difference in the lives of those around him was evident in all his endeavors.

He is survived by his sons, David Hayes Jr. (Lindsey) and Chris Hayes (Danielle), along with his beloved grandchildren: Niki Jernigan (Tyler), William Hayes, Rebeca Hayes, Lela Hayes, Emma Hayes, Corbyn Lowery, and Adair Hayes. Additionally, he leaves behind his great-grandchildren: Titus Jernigan, Niklaus Jernigan, and Ellie Purvis. David is also survived by his sister, Rebecca Carpenter; Nancy Hayes; Shina Masingo (Larry Wendler); several nieces and nephews; two aunts, Betty and Alma; his girlfriend, Ruth Miller; his faithful companion, his cat Thomas; and hunting buddy, Skip Katzman.

David is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hayes; his parents, Adair and Shirley Hayes; and stepfather, Herb Gregory “Cap.” He was also preceded by his deer hunting buddy, Larry Leonard.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate David’s life during visitation on Monday, October 27, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on October 28, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Grayson Funeral Home, 893 High Street, Charlestown, IN 47111.
