Andrea "Andy" (Wieck) Gilbert

Andy, as she was known by most, was born in 1950, the second of six siblings, and raised in northern Wisconsin along the shore of Lake Michigan. Growing up, money was always tight and necessities were scarce. She honed her grit at a young age along with a strong sense of responsibility, independence, a love for the water and ... chocolate. She met her husband, Harold Gilbert, in Wisconsin as his service in the coast guard was nearing completion. They married in 1970 and moved to Marysville, IN where they would build a farm, a family and a life together that spanned 53 years. Andy had to learn how to be a "country girl". She learned how to drive a tractor and plant soybeans, tend to animals, and prepare (delicious) meals to feed hungry farmers in the field. She honed the art of gardening, growing lush flower and herb beds, and canned hundreds of quarts of vegetables every summer. She was a hard-working do-it-yourself-er who also learned to be a grass mower, a farm bookkeeper, homemaker ... and a mother. Her world revolved around her daughter, Shanon Gilbert Hougland. Her orbit expanded to include her son-in-law, Jason Hougland, and readily extended again when her grandchildren, Eli and Lila Hougland, were born and gave her the title she treasured most, "Momom". She was happiest when she had a clear sense of purpose and was helping others. Andy loved her people with everything she had, even when she had trouble showing it. She was devoted and dedicated and will be greatly missed. Now, she is in Heaven, reunited with her parents, Gordon and June Wieck, and holding her son, Jason Elden Gilbert, for the first time. And she is at peace. A Life Celebration gathering will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, from 1:00 P.M. until 3:30 P.M. at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Andy may take the form of donations to Emmanuel Cemetery Association.
