d. May 2, 2011

Alice Lee (Smith) Oney of Louisville, KY died at the age of 97 years at Baptist East
Hospital in Louisville on May 2 with her sister Mildred and members of her extended
family at her side.
Born January 8, 1914, Alice was the oldest of eight children born to John and Edna

Ohio. Following World War II, Alice and Walter lived at several places, including
Arlington, VA; Denver, CO; Fort Knox, KY; Fort Campbell, KY; Tokyo; and Fort
Harrison, Indiana. After Oney’s retirement from active duty in 1956, Alice and Walter
settled in Boulder, CO, where they lived until shortly before Walter’s death in 1981.
Alice then relocated to Louisville, where she led a full and active life, surrounded by her
family.
Alice was an avid amateur painter of landscapes and still lifes. Her compositions often
included scenes from the Rocky Mountains, where she frequently hiked with her
husband. She loved entertaining and having a house full of guests.
Alice is survived by a son, Walter Jr. and his wife Marty, of Fitchburg, MA; her sister
Mildred (Midge) Davis, brother Dewey Smith and his wife Elaine, and sister-in-law
Stella Smith, all of greater Louisville; sister-in-law Mary (Oney) McCurdy of Marion,
OH; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and their descendants.
